Red River College of Applied Arts, Science and Technology
Red River College is the largest and most comprehensive institute of applied learning in Manitoba. It provides the highest quality education and training for 32,000 full and part-time enrolments each year.
Through more than 110 diploma, certificate and apprenticeship programs it enables skilled, experienced and motivated graduates to experience success in the market place. It is the central focus of the College to ensure learner success by setting the standard in applied post-secondary education and meeting the demand of the marketplace.
The College is committed to staying current and responsive to the dynamic and evolving requirements of the marketplace. One of the methods is through an advisory committee for each program. Twelve hundred representatives from over 1,000 employing or service agencies provide a direct link to the real world and consult extensively on ensuring programs adapt and change to economic and social realities. In addition, through boards and industry contacts, instructors ensure program curricula incorporate leading edge theories, trends and practices. RRC's applied education prepares learners for today's and tomorrow's workplace.
In the Electrical Engineering Technology program, students are trained for entry level employment as engineering technologists in the electrical industry with a broad scope of employment opportunities. Students develop the conceptual knowledge base and troubleshooting skills to find satisfaction and fulfillment in a range of roles that include design, installation, maintenance, production, and technical sales/support.
A condensed view of topics covered includes:
- Planning, designing, and specifications of power systems with motor protection for buildings and industrial plants. Students will generate AutoCAD drawings, calculate short circuit currents, and co-ordinate fuses, circuit breakers, and protective relays.
- Hydro electric power generation, transmission, and distribution systems with a view to operation, control, and protection.
- Assessment of power system harmonics concerns by measuring TDD and THD and offering solutions to improve performance.
- Use and application of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency motor drives (VFDs), soft starters, and data communication to link all of the preceding elements for the control of manufacturing systems.
